Issue

When trying to create an extract with files that are located into a Dropbox folder, the following error might occur:
Tableau Data Engine Error: 401: PackageDatabase: failed, src="[.tde file path]", dst="[.tde.pkg file path]", errno=32, error="The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.", exception="[.tde.pkg file path]

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau files located in Dropbox folder
  • Extract

Resolution

Try one of the following workarounds:
  1. Save the files used by Tableau Desktop in a separate folder (outside the Dropbox folder) when working on them.
  2. Pause Dropbox syncing, or stop Dropbox entirely when using files in your Dropbox folder with Tableau Desktop.
For further assistance, please contact Dropbox Support.

Cause

Dropbox processes are accessing the files when Tableau is trying to access them as well.
