Issue

When adding fields from a Microsoft SQL Server database to a field, the following error might occur:

SQL Server Error: 0x80040E14: Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 8.0.2
  • Windows 7
  • MS SQL Server 2008 R2

Resolution

Work with your database administrator for troubleshooting steps and additional testing on the SQL Server Editor.

Cause

SQL Server is interpreting the field incorrectly. Possible specific causes:
  • SQL Server might be using precedence in queries and the issue may arise from the data type being converted for comparison within SQL Server.
  • The last part of Company ID/Contact ID must be 12 characters.
  • The curly braces in the Company ID are being interpreted incorrectly.
