Error "[Simba][ThriftExtension] (5) Error occurred while contacting server: invalid sasl status." Connecting to AWS-Hosted SparkSQL

Issue

When you try to connect to SparkSQL from Tableau Desktop, the following error occurs:
[Simba][ThriftExtension] (5) Error occurred while contacting server: invalid sasl status. This could be because you are trying to establish a non-SSL connection to a SSL-enabled server.
 

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • AWS
  • Spark SQL

Resolution

The following troubleshooting steps may resolve this issue:
  • Ensure hive.server.2.transport.mode is set to binary (the default value). 
  • Copy the hive-site.xml config file from /user/lib/hive/conf/ to /usr/lib/spark/conf/
  • Ensure that the Spark Thriftserver port is used when making the connection from Tableau Desktop.
  • If the default port (10000) is used, there might be conflicts with the Hive Thriftserver. To specify a non-default port, try starting Spark Thriftserver with the following option:
    --hiveconf hive.server2.thrift.port=9999
  • Ensure that the security rules in your AWS instance allow the computer running Tableau Desktop to connect to the cluster.
