Error "Sign In Failed" On Login Screen in Browser After Upgrading Tableau Server

Published: 25 Aug 2016
Last Modified Date: 30 Dec 2016

Issue

After upgrading to Tableau Server 10, the login window may load in browser with a "Sign In Failed" error.

Additionally,
  • The message 'signin?error=1000004?' might appear in the URL.
  • tabadmin status -v might indicate that the Tableau Server Repository is stopped or setting up.
  • Logs might indicate: "PSQLException: Connection to localhost:8060 refused".

Environment

Tableau Server 10

Resolution

Increase the clustercontroller timeout setting for Postgres (the Tableau Server repository). Open the Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands:
tabadmin stop
tabadmin set clustercontroller.pgsql_connection_timeout_ms 12000 (up to 180000 in single node environment)
tabadmin config
tabadmin start

Cause

Postgres is taking longer than the default timeout to start up fully (default is 60 sec, or 60000 ms). This can be due to slow Input/Outpout or other environmental factors.

Additional Information

Increasing single-node timeout should have no impact on performance. However, in multi-node high availability (HA) environments, increasing the timeout may cause issues due to preventing fail over when it is necessary.
