Error "Sign in failed... Check credentials for typos and confirm that you can access the database directly" Refreshing Salesforce Extract

Published: 06 Apr 2016
Last Modified Date: 26 Apr 2016

Issue

When refreshing a Salesforce extract that has embedded Salesforce username and password, the refresh might fail and the following error might occur:

Sign in failed... Check credentials for typos and confirm that you can access the database directly

In the Edit Connection dialogue, the authentication type is set to "Embedded Salesforce username and password in the connection" and Test Connection is successful.

Additionally, the following error might appear in the Tableau Server Admin view:

INVALID_LOGIN: Invalid username, password, security token; or user locked out.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 9.3.0
  • Salesforce

Resolution

Option 1

Embed credentials using the OAuth option:
  1. Open Edit Connection.
  2. Select "Embedded Salesforce credentials in the connection".
Note: This will require configuring Tableau Server and Salesforce for Oauth connections. For more information, see Set Up OAuth for Salesforce.

Option 2

Download the data source or workbook, open in Tableau Desktop 9.3 and republish.

Cause

Backward compatibility issue - workbooks and data sources published from Tableau Desktop 9.2 or earlier do not refresh in Tableau Server 9.3.0. The issue will be seen if Tableau Server is upgraded from an older version to 9.3.0 and also occurs if publishing from Tableau Desktop 9.2 or earlier to Tableau Server 9.3.0.

Additional Information

If Tableau Desktop 9.2 (or earlier) publishes to Tableau Server 9.3.0, the extract is successful once. Thereafter the refresh fails until the data source is overwritten using Tableau Desktop 9.3.
