Issue

After you publish a view connected to a SharePoint data source to Tableau Server, when you try to refresh the extract or open the view, the following error might occur:

An unexpected error occurred on the server. If you continue to receive this error please contact your Tableau Server Administrator.

TableauException: Database error 0x80004005: The Microsoft Office Access database engine could not find the object '<filepath>'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • File hosted on SharePoint

Resolution

The following troubleshooting steps might resolve the issue:
  • Ensure that the Tableau Server Run As User can reach the network location where the file is stored:
    1. Sign into Tableau Server as a Run As User. For more information, see Run As User in Tableau Help.
    2. Open Windows Explorer and try to access the file.
  • Make sure you are using the full UNC path. For more information, see UNC Path Naming for files stored on SharePoint on the White Pages blog.

Cause

Run As User does not have permission to access the location or the file path is not referencing the full UNC path.

Note: A UNC path is the full name of a resource, directory, or file on a network. It conforms to the \\servername\sharename\directory\filename syntax, where servername is the name of the server and sharename is the name of the shared resource, and directory\filename is the directory path. For example, the following text file D:\datasource.xlsx would have the following UNC path: \\workstation1\d$\datasource.xlsx, where"workstation1" is the full computer name.
