Error "Registration failed" During Activation

Issue

When you try to activate Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, or Tableau Reader, the following error occurs: 

Registration failed.
We were unable to complete registration because the following error occurred: (Unknown Error)

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Reader

Resolution

To help resolve this issue, try the following:

Activate Tableau products by running as administrator

Tableau Server

  1. Sign in to the computer running Tableau Server as a local administrator.
  2. Select Start All Programs > Tableau Server > Manage Product Keys, right-click Manage Product Keys, and then select Run as Administrator.
  3. Try to activate again.

Tableau Desktop and Tableau Reader

  1. Close Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader.
  2. Right-click Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader on your computer, and then select Run as administrator
  3. Try to activate again.

 

Cause

You do not have permissions to write to system registry.
