Error "PQstatus: 1, could not connect to server: Connection refused" When Attempting to Publish a Workbook With a Large Data Extract

Issue

When creating or using extracts on an Amazon EC2 m5 (4xlarge) or c5 (large) instance, Tableau's Hyper process sometimes quit unexpectedly with the following error: 

throw DataSourceException (type=UnableToConnect): PQstatus: 1, could not connect to server: Connection refused Is the server running on host \"localhost\" (xxx.x.x.x) and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 8544?

Environment

  • Tableau Server 10.5.0
  • Linux
  • Windows
  • Amazon EC2 m5 (4xlarge) ; Amazon EC2 c5 (large)

Resolution

Option 1

Use an AWS m4 EC2 instance instead of the newer m5 EC2 instance.

Option 2

As a Tableau Server Administrator, upgrade to Tableau Server 10.5.2. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server in Tableau Help. 

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 723876) which has been fixed in a recent release of Tableau Server.
