Error "PowerPivot Add-In Missing"

Issue

When you try to connect to an Excel PowerPivot data source, the following error might occur:

The drivers necessary to connect to this database server are not properly installed.  Visit http://www.tableausoftware.com/drivers to download driver setup files.

It appears that you don't have Tableau PowerPivot Add-In (Excel Add-In) installed. Please install Tableau PowerPivot Add-In and try again.

Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • PowerPivot for Excel
  • Microsoft Excel

Resolution

To resolve this issue, verify that the Tableau PowerPivot Add-in is enabled in Excel.
  1. In Excel, select File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. Verify that the Tableau PowerPivot Connector add-in is enabled.
If the Tableau PowerPivot Add-in is disabled, enable it by following these steps:
  1. In Excel, select File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. In the Manage list, click Disabled Items, and then click Go.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, select Tableau PowerPivot Connector, and then click Enable.
If the Tableau PowerPivot Add-in is enabled and you continue to receive the error, verify that the Tableau PowerPivot Add-in is selected in COM Add-Ins:
  1. In Excel, navigate to File > Options > Add-ins.
  2. In the Manage list, select COM Add-ins, and then click Go.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, select the box next to Tableau Power Pivot Connector, and then click OK.

Cause

The Tableau PowerPivot Add-in was disabled in Excel.
