Error "No Tableau Server user found" Refreshing Workbook Containing Published Extract

Extract refresh jobs for workbooks which contain a published data source fail with the following error:
com.tableausoftware.backgrounder.runner.BackgroundJobRunner - Error executing backgroundjob: :refresh_extracts java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: com.tableausoftware.nativeapi.dll.DataSourceException: No Tableau Server user found.

  • Tableau Online
  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Desktop 9.3.0

As a workaround, embed the published data source in the workbook and refresh the workbook containing local extracts.
  1. Open the affected workbook in Tableau Desktop.
  2. Right-click the published data source and select Create Local Copy
  3. Replace the published data source with the newly created local copy.
  4. Right-click and close the published version of the data source.
  5. Republish the workbook to Tableau Server (containing only embedded extracts).
  6. Refresh the workbook to confirm functionality.
