Error "Kerberos timeout" Signing in to SQL Server from Tableau Desktop on the Mac

Issue

When you try to use Active Directory authentication to sign in to Microsoft SQL Server from Tableau Desktop on the Mac, the following error might occur:

An error occurred while communicating with the Microsoft SQL Server Database data source '<data source name>'.
Your connection to SQL Server could not be established or was lost, most likely because of a Kerberos timeout. To renew your Kerberos ticket, close tableau and then try any of the following:
  • Lock and unlock your Mac
  • Log out from your Mac and then log in again
  • If your Local User account is different from your Active Directory account, run the following command in Terminal: knit <ADUsername@domain>. For example: kinit myuser@mycompnay.

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 8.2.4 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop in the Tableau Knowledge Base.

Option 2

Use the following workaround:
  • Sign in to Microsoft SQL Server with a SQL Server username and password.
