Error "IPC_NamedPipe::Select(WaitForMultipleObjects)" and Tableau Desktop Unresponsive

Published: 26 Aug 2014
Last Modified Date: 21 Nov 2014

Issue

When you try to connect to a data source, Tableau Desktop might become unresponsive, and the following error might occur:

Timeout
 - IPC_NamedPipe::Select(WaitForMultipleObjects)

Environment

Tableau Desktop 8.2.0 - 8.2.4

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 8.2.5 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop in the Tableau Knowledge Base.

Option 2

Move the My Tableau Repository folder to the computer running Tableau Desktop. For more information, see the "Changing the Repository Location" section of Files and Folders in Tableau Help.

Cause

This behavior is a known issue that has been corrected in more recent releases.

Additional Information

Although My Tableau Repository is the default location for saving and loading Tableau files, you are not required to store workbooks and data sources in this location. Therefore, after you move My Tableau Repository to a local drive, you can still save workbooks and data sources to network locations.
