Error: "Invalid table name value" When Connecting to Files Saved in Excel v. 1706

Published: 25 Aug 2017
Last Modified Date: 19 Nov 2017

Issue

When attempting to connect to an Excel file (that has been saved in version 1706 or 1707 of Excel), the following error message might occur:

"An error occurred while communicating with data source.
Invalid table name value."

Alternatively, the Data Connection window may display no sheets and Tableau may freeze.

Environment

  • Tableau Online 10.0 - 10.3
  • Tableau Desktop 10.0 - 10.3
  • Tableau Server 10.0 - 10.3
  • Excel version 1706 or 1707 (released Aug 11 and 24th 2017 via Office 365 update channels)

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 10.3.3 ; 10.2.5 ; 10.1.11 or 10.0.13. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop in Tableau Help.

Option 2

As a workaround, open and re-save the Excel workbook using an older version of Excel (such as 1701) in order to fix the file, so it can again be successfully read by Tableau.

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 686481) that has been fixed in a recent release of Tableau Desktop.
  • Excel introduced changes in its file format starting with version 1706, which some Office 365 subscribers received starting in August 2017.
  • Our team is working on adding support for the updated file format. Such compatibility with Excel's updated file format will be added in a future maintenance release of Tableau.
