Error "INVALID_LOGIN: Invalid username, password, security token; or user locked out" Connecting to Salesforce

Issue

When connecting to Salesforce, the following error might occur:

INVALID_LOGIN: Invalid username, password, security token; or user locked out.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Salesforce.com

Resolution

Work with your Salesforce administrator to ensure that all of the following are enabled on the company account, as well as the user profile for all affected users: 
  • SOAP API for logging on. 
  • REST API for getting meta data. 
  • BULK API for downloading objects. 
  • REST API for downloading objects that the BULK API does not support. 
  • Replication SOAP APIs for retrieving changes in the data. 

Additional Information

Some Salesforce security policies require a security token in addition to a password if logging in from a computer with an IP address that is not listed in a trusted range by the Salesforce administrator. If logging in with just a password, an error message requesting a security token might occur. The requested token must be appended to the end of the password. 

Salesforce user records can be locked if a user has too many unsuccessful login attempts. To verify, navigate to the user details page in Salesforce and check the login history.
