Error "Invalid File Path" Refreshing Flat Files on Network Drive Using Sync Client

Published: 03 Nov 2016
Last Modified Date: 04 Dec 2017

Issue

When using the Sync Client to update the file path to UNC for a data source on a network drive, the previous file path may still be used resulting in the following error:

Failed to refresh data source: [Data Source Name] due to the following error: Unable to connect to the file \"H:\\NetworkDrive\\DataSources\\ExcelFile.xlsx\". Check that the file exists and that you have sufficient access privileges for it.

Environment

  • Tableau Online
  • Sync Client 9.3.6, 10.0.0 - 10.0.3, 10.1.0

Resolution

Use one of the following workarounds.

Option 1 Upgrade Tableau Desktop and Sync Client to version 10.0.5, or 10.1.1 and later. See Upgrade Tableau Desktop for more information.

Option 2 Republish the Data Source using UNC after removing it from Sync Client.
  1. Remove the Data Source and its Schedule from the Sync Client.
  2. In Tableau Desktop, correct the drive file path to UNC, and republish the data source to Tableau Online, overwriting the existing connection.
  3. Schedule the Data Source to refresh using the Sync Client.
Note: If the error persists, you may need to republish using a new data source name.

Option 3 Run the Sync Client using Run only when logged on

Option 4 Move the data source file to the local drive that the Sync Client is installed on, and republish the data source with the new location.

Option 5 Refresh the published data source manually using Tableau Desktop. See Refresh Extracts from Tableau Desktop for more information.
