Issue

When you are working with blended data, the Latitude and Longitude fields might be grayed out in the secondary data source.
Also, in Tableau Desktop 8.1 and earlier versions, when you try to create a map from geographic fields in a secondary data source, the following error might occur:

An error occurred while communicating with the data source.

Invalid field formula due to limitations in the data source.

In Tableau Desktop 8.2 and later versions, when you try to create a map from geographic fields in a secondary data source, filled maps and symbol maps are unavailable in Show Me.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Blended data

Resolution

Use one of the two following workarounds:
  • Make the data source that contains the geographic data the primary data source, and then recreate the visualization. For more information, see Working with Multiple Connections in Tableau Help.
  • Use a join instead of blending the data. For more information, see Joining Tables in Tableau Help.

Cause

The ability to map geographic data from secondary data sources is not currently built into Tableau Desktop.

When using data blending, Tableau Desktop disables the generated Latitude and Longitude fields for secondary data sources. The error occurs when you attempt to create a map visualization from the disabled generated Latitude and Longitude fields in a secondary data source.
