Error "Invalid database name value" Running Extract Refresh

Published: 10 Sep 2014
Last Modified Date: 16 Feb 2017

Issue

When you try to run an extract refresh on Tableau Server, the extract refresh might fail, and the following error might appear in the Background Tasks view:

com.tableausoftware.nativeapi.dll.DataSourceException: Invalid database name value

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Extracts

Resolution

One of the following steps might resolve the issue:
  • Use the UNC path to connect to the source file from which the extract is created. For more information, see UNC on MSDN.
  • Verify that the Tableau Server Run As User can access the source file from the computer running Tableau Server. For more information, see Run As Account Settings to Confirm in Tableau Help.
If the extract or the data source flat file is located in a Linux environment, work with your IT team to create a UNIX shell in order for the UNC path to work properly from a Linux computer to Tableau Server’s Window computer.

Cause

The Tableau Server Run As User is unable to access the source file.
