Issue

When adding a node to a Linux cluster, the operation fails and the command line output ends in:

Calling node installer...
Operation failed.
ERROR: installer returned status 1

Additonally, the worker has the following error in the app install log:

INFO  com.tableausoftware.installer.operations.DownloadBootstrapEntityOperation - Login in to the Controller
DEBUG com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.ServerApi - Posting login request for user <admin user>
DEBUG ccom.tableausoftware.tabadmin.ServerApi - Client request: POST https://<FQDN>:8850/api/1.0/login
ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.ServerApi - Exception sending request org.springframework.web.client.ResourceAccessException: I/O error on POST request for "https://<FQDN>:8850/api/1.0/login": Host name '<FQDN>' does not match the certificate subject provided by the peer (CN=<shortname>); nested exception is javax.net.ssl.SSLPeerUnverifiedException: Host name '<FQDN>' does not match the certificate subject provided by the peer (CN=<shortname>)

Environment

Tableau Server for Linux (Beta test)

Resolution

As the administrator, re-create the SSL certificate using the Host name in the error message. In the example above, this means recreating the certificate using the fully qualified domain name (FQDN), instead of the shortname. For more information about fully qualified domain name, see this thrid party link: https://techterms.com/definition/fqdn.

Cause

You need to use fully-qualified domain name (e.g. server123.mydomain.suffix) instead of just the shortname (e.g. server123) for the certificate to be accepted.
