Error "Failed to connect to the SQL Server instance" on the Mac

Issue

When you try to connect to Microsoft SQL Server hosted on Azure from Tableau Desktop on the Mac, the following error might occur:
 
Unable to connect to the ODBC Data Source. Check that the necessary drivers are installed and that the connection properties are valid.
 
[Simba][SqlServerODBC] (10) Failed to connect to the SQL Server instance.
Unable to connect to the server "<server address>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.
 
Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 8.2
  • OS X
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Microsoft Azure

Resolution

Option 1: 

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 9.0 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop

Option 2:

Connect to Microsoft SQL Server from Tableau Desktop on Windows.

Cause

A supported connection from Tableau Desktop on the Mac to Microsoft SQL Server hosted on Azure was added in Tableau Desktop 9.0.
