Published: 01 Aug 2016 Last Modified Date: 24 Aug 2022
Issue
Creation of an administrator account fails with the following error message:
Failed to authenticate username and password.
Tableau Server is configured with a single-label domain with a name five characters or less, with .local appended.
Environment
Tableau Server
Resolution
Use one of the following options:
Configure a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
Modify the single-label domain to have 5 characters or more
Configure Tableau Sever to use local authentication rather than Active Directory.
Cause
Tableau Server has a 5 character minimum requirement on domain names.
Additional Information
Note that while single-label domain names are, strictly speaking, allowed by Microsoft, Microsoft recommends against creating or continuing to use single-label domains and they are in the process of deprecation. For example, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 explicitly blocks the creation of a single-label domain.
"Existing products may continue to function with SLDs, but SLDs are not a recommended configuration for future deployments and may not work with some products or versions… We recommend that customers deploy their infrastructure by using common, tested configurations to minimize extra deployment and testing costs. -- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2269810
"Because there is no business or technical reason to create new domains that have single-label DNS names, the Active Directory Installation Wizard in Windows Server 2008 R2 explicitly blocks creating such domains." -- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/300684
