Error "Error executing backgroundjob: :sync_ad_group" When Synchronizing Active Directory

Issue

When synchronizing Active Directory with Tableau Server, the synchronization might fail and an error message similar to the following might appear in the logs:

scheduled-background-job-runner-1 : ERROR com.tableausoftware.backgrounder.runner.BackgroundJobRunner - Error executing backgroundjob: :sync_ad_group
java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.NullPointerException
Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.tableausoftware.winldap.WinLdapUser.<init>(WinLdapUser.java:43)

Environment

  • Tableau Server 9.1.8 and 9.2.6
  • Active Directory

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade Tableau Server to 9.1.9 or 9.2.7. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server.

Option 2

Review user accounts in Active Directory to ensure that all users have the correct User Principal Name (UPN).

Cause

One or more users have a blank or incorrectly configured UPN.
