Error "Custom SQL relation refers to non-existent parameter" Changing Parameter

Published: 17 Mar 2017
Last Modified Date: 17 Mar 2017

Issue

When connected to a published data source containing a Custom SQL query referencing a parameter, the data does not automatically update when the parameter is changed.

Additionally, the following error might occur:
Custom SQL relation refers to non-existent parameter

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 10
  • Windows 8
  • MS SQL Server

Resolution

Option 1:
Right-click on the data source and select 'Refresh'

Option 2:
  1. Close the published data source containing the Custom SQL
  2. Delete the parameter referenced in the Custom SQL from the workbook
  3. Connect to the published data source containing the Custom SQL
  4. The parameter will be brought in and should now auto-update the data when changed.

Cause

The parameter referenced in the custom SQL already existed in the workbook before connecting to the data source, which caused issues in the workbook's XML.
