Error "Custom SQL Relation Refers to a Non-Existent Parameter" When Connecting to a Published Data Source

When connecting to a published data source using custom SQL, the following error might occur: 

Custom SQL relation refers to a non-existent parameter


  • Tableau Desktop 8.2.x
  • Tableau Server 8.2.x
  • Custom SQL data connection which contains a parameter


Option 1

Upgrade to the latest version of Tableau Desktop. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop.

Option 2

Remove the parameter.

Option 3

Use a local (non-published) data source.

Option 4

From the Data Source page, go to Data > Convert to Custom SQL and convert the data joins to custom SQL.
