Error "Couldn't Embed the Tableau View Because An Exception Occurred" Using Trusted Authentication With Sharepoint

Published: 05 Oct 2015

Issue

When using Tableau Server configured for Active Directory and Trusted Authentication, and accessing views embedded in SharePoint 2013, the following error might occur:

Couldn't embed the Tableau view because an exception occurred.

The following error is also seen in the VizQL logs:

ERROR wgsessionId= com.tableausoftware.model.workgroup.service.TrustedTicketServiceImpl - Invalid user: i:0#.w|<domain\username>"

Environment

  • Tableau Server 9.0.4
  • SharePoint 2013
  • Active Directory
  • Trusted Authentication

Resolution

Work with your SharePoint administrator to resolve invalid user errors reported by SharePoint.

Cause

When i:0#.w| appears before the domain\username, it is an indication that Claims authentication is in use on SharePoint.

The i:0#.w| is causing the "Invalid User" message because the username passed in the POST request must match a username in Tableau Server, and since Active Directory authentication is in place, the username needs to be passed as domain\username.
