Error "Could not find the referenced file" When Refreshing Extracts Based on Files on Mapped Drive

Issue

When refreshing an extract based on a file located on a mapped drive, and the mapped drive does not correspond to the letter assigned when the extract was created, the following error might occur:
 
Could not find the referenced file '<drive letter>:\<file>'. Replace it with another file?

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Network or Mapped Drives
  • Extracts

Resolution

Map the external drive to the same drive letter across computers in the network, or navigate to the file from Tableau Desktop to refresh the extract.

Cause

Tableau Desktop cannot access the file since the location has changed or is no longer available.
