Issue

When you try to connect to a .csv or .txt file that contains multiple periods in the file name using a Legacy connection, the following error might occur:

Unable to open the text file. Please check that you have specified the correct field delimiter and that you have access privileges for the file.
Microsoft JET database error 0x80004005: The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'file.1.csv'.  Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly.
The table "file#1#csv" does not exist.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • .csv or .txt file

Resolution

Option 1:

Use the updated Tableau text file connection rather than the Legacy connection.

Option 2:

Remove internal periods from the file name.
For example:
  • file.1.csv should be renamed to file1.csv
  • file.1.txt should be renamed to file1.txt

Cause

The Microsoft JET technology used for the legacy connection to file-based data sources is not compatible with filenames containing multiple periods.
