Error "connect() failed: errno = 10061" Connecting to Hadoop Hive

Issue

When you try to connect to Hortonworks Hadoop Hive data source, one of the following errors might occur:

[Hortonworks][Hardy] (22) Error from ThriftHiveClient: connect() failed: errno = 10061

or

[Hortonworks][Hardy] (34) Error from Hive: connect() failed: errno = 10061

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 
  • Hortonworks Hadoop Hive

Resolution

The following troubleshooting steps might solve the issue:
  1. Follow the instructions in Connecting to Hadoop Hive in the Tableau knowledge base to ensure that:
    • The correct drivers are installed.
    • The appropriate port is selected.
    • The correct Hive Server (HiveServer or HiveServer2) is selected.
  2. Restart the Hortonworks Hadoop Hive server.
  3. Add exceptions to firewall and anti-virus software for communication to Hive server. For more information, see Web Proxy and Firewall Settings in the Tableau knowledge base.
  4. If the issue continues, contact Hortonworks Support.

Cause

The following are possible causes of this issue:

  • Incorrect port and/or Hive Service defined in connection.
  • Network issues.
  • The Hive server is not started.
