Error "Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost" When Refreshing Extract

Issue

When refreshing an extract on Tableau Server, the extract might fail with the following error:
 
TableauException: Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost.

Environment

Tableau Server

Resolution

  • Verify that the machine hosting Tableau Server meets hardware requirements. For more information, see Before you install...
  • Create a smaller extract or break large extract into subset extracts if needed.

Cause

The data extract is too large and the refresh exhausts available system resources.

Additional Information

The following error might appear in the log files:

ExternalProtocol::PipeMessageSink::WriteBytes: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.\n - IPC_NamedPipe::Send(WriteFile)
