Error "Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost" When Refreshing or Creating Extract

Issue

When you try to create or refresh an extract, the following error might occur:

The connection to the data source might have been lost. Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Microsoft Office Access Database Engine 2007 (Version 12.0.4518.1031)
  • Connection to Excel data source in Tableau Desktop 8.1 and earlier
  • Connection to Excel data source using Legacy Connection in Tableau Desktop 8.2 and later

Cause

This issue is caused by using an incorrect driver (12.0.4518.1031 Microsoft Access Database Engine 2007 driver).

Additional Information

The issue does not reproduce when an earlier version of the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2007 (12.0.6612.1000) is used or when the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 driver is used.
