Error "Cannot connect to Tableau Server" Using the Connect to Data Menu

Issue

When you try to sign in to Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop by using the Connect to Data > Tableau Server menu option, the following error might occur after you select a site:

Cannot connect to Tableau Server. Please check the server name and port and try again

When you try to sign in to Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop by using the Server > Sign in menu option, you are able to connect successfully.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 8.2.0 and 8.2.1
  • Tableau Server is configured to use a custom port

Resolution

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 8.2.2 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server in the Tableau Knowledge Base.

Cause

This behavior is a known issue that has been corrected in more recent releases. Custom ports that are specified during connections to Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop were not being saved.
