Published: 04 Apr 2013
Last Modified Date: 14 Jun 2013

When using Tableau Desktop 7 to connect to extracts published to Tableau Server 8, you may see the following error:

BinaryTupleSource: Bad magic number

  • Tableau Server 8.0.0
  • Tableau Desktop 7.0.x
  • Published Data Sources

To resolve this issue, follow one of the solutions, below.

Solution 1:
  • Upgrade Tableau Desktop 7.0.x to Tableau Desktop 8.0
Solution 2:
  • Downgrade Tableau Server 8.0 to Tableau Server 7.0.14

Earlier versions of Tableau cannot connect, use, or open files or items saved or upgraded to later versions of Tableau.

Additional Information

  • The published data sources are automatically upgraded to 8.0 when Tableau Server is upgraded to version 8.0.
  • Tableau Desktop 7.0.x cannot open workbooks or data sources saved to Tableau Server 8.0
  • Workbooks that are saved in an earlier version of Tableau Desktop cannot connect to Tableau Server data sources in a later version of Tableau Server. For example, a version 7.0 workbook cannot connect to a version 8.0 Tableau Server data source. If your workbooks rely on the data server, you must upgrade Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server at the same time in order to continue using these workbooks.
