Issue

When you start Tableau Server after an upgrade, the following error might occur:

Tableau Server initialization failed.

In addition, the following error appears in the tabadmin.log files:

(193) %1 is not a valid Win32 application.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Windows

Resolution

This issue occurs when one or both of the following conditions are true:
  • There is a file named Program in your SystemDrive folder.
  • There is a file named Tableau in your ProgramFiles folder.
Locate the file that is causing the error, and then rename, delete or move that file.

Cause

Windows Service Control Manager (Services.exe) will verify the path of a service executable when starting that service. If it encounters a file with a conflicting name within that directory path, it can't locate the executable. For example, if Windows Service Control Manager is searching for the path C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\9.1\bin\tabsvc.exe, and encounters a file named C:\Program.txt or C:\Program Files\Tableau.txt, it can't locate tabsvc.exe and the error above will occur.
