Duplicate Data Appears After Running an Incremental Refresh of Vertica

Published: 05 Apr 2017

Issue

After running an incremental refresh of Vertica data, then sometimes data for the last timestamp will be duplicated

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Vertica

Resolution

Option 1

Only use full refreshes. For more information, see Refresh Extracts.

Option 2

Truncate the timestamp in the Vertica database to 1000th of a second or less precision.

Cause

Tableau Desktop stores timestamps only to the 1000th of a second precision, which looks like 2017-03-09 16:35:08.000.
  • Vertica databases can store the timestamp to a higher level of precision.
  • Sometimes the last timestamp in the extract is rounded down, which means that the full timestamp in Vertica is technically after the last timestamp in the Tableau extract.
