Date Interpreted D/M/YY Instead of M/D/YY

Published: 15 Mar 2013
Last Modified Date: 19 Jun 2017

Issue

The DATE() function interprets the string argument as d/m/yy rather than m/d/yy.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

In the operating system Region and Language settings, change the Short Date format to M/d/yyyy.

Windows 7 steps

  1. On the Start menu, go to Control Panel > Region and Language.
  2. On the Formats tab, make the following selections:
    • Under Formats select English (United States).
    • Under Short Date, select M/d/yyyy.

As a best practice for converting strings to date values using Date(, pass the string in the ISO 8601 format of YYYY-MM-DD.

For example:
Date("2013-02-15") = February 15, 2013

Cause

To interpret date strings, Tableau Desktop uses the Format setting from the operating system Region and Language settings.
