Data Engine Intermittently Down on Virtual Machine that Dynamically Changes Underlying Hardware

Published: 23 Jul 2013

Issue

When running Tableau Server in a virtual environment where underlying hardware might change dynamically, the data engine might become unresponsive and extract-based workbooks might display the following error:

Tableau Data Engine Error: 8: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • Virtual environment

Resolution

Disable any features that allow the virtual computer(s) running Tableau Server to change underlying hardware.

Examples of such features are:
  • Dynamic RAM - allows machine to change amount of available RAM depending on current RAM utilization.

Cause

Tableau Server components (especially Data Engine and Repository) are adversely affected by dynamic changes in hardware configuration, such as memory.
