Issue

When loading a custom postcode csv file, the following error is encountered and the import fails:

"Warnings occurred while importing the custom geocoding data. Do you want to keep the imported geocoding? The file <fileName.csv> could not be used because it was missing the following levels: [Country]. Level names are case sensitive and must match exactly"

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 9.3.6
  • Windows 10
  • Excel

Resolution

Change the "Postcode" header in the csv file to a name other than "Postcode" and resave the csv file. Once the header has been changed from "Postcode" to "Postcode-UK", the newly saved file will be correctly imported.

Cause

The "Postcode" column in the csv file is clashing with the native Tableau Postcode geographic role and Tableau is looking for an accompanying country column.
