Cannot Add License when Installing Tableau with App-V

Published: 20 Mar 2013

Issue

When you start Tableau Reader, the following error occurs:

Unable to Add License

Environment

  • Tableau Reader
  • Microsoft App-V (Application Virtualization)

Resolution

A workaround for this issue is to use a hosted solution such as RemoteApp or Citrix.

Additional Information

Tableau Reader and Desktop products cannot be installed in non-persistent virtual environments, because the FLEXNet licensing mechanism captures unique machine identifiers on the system on which the Tableau product is installed. This unique machine identifier information is stored in trusted storage and various other components of the activation. Trusted storage is in the machine layer of the system and is not visible to the Windows file system.
