Browser Cannot Access Server Using the IP Address

Issue

When you try to connect to Tableau Server using the IP address, an error similar to the the following is displayed:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Resolution

  1. Open the Command Prompt on the computer running Tableau Server, and run the following command:

    ipconfig

  2. Enter the IP address returned into the browser address bar (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) to access Tableau Server.

Cause

The IP address has changed.

Additional Information

You can also try one of these additional steps to connect to the server.

  • If you configured Tableau Server to use a port other than 80, append the port to the URL that you use to access Tableau Server. For example:

    http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8000

  • Enter http://full-servername in the browser.

    To find the server name:

    • In the Windows Control Panel, open System and Security > System.
    • Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, the Full computer name is the server name to use.
  • Use the address http://localhost instead of the server name.
