Blank Screen Opening View and VizQL Down

Issue

When opening a view on Tableau Server, users see a blank screen where the view would be.  The rest of the UI might still load.  
The status screen shows that the Vizql server is down, even if the tabadmin status shows it is running.  

In the Vizql logs, you might see some of the following errors:

GenericJDBCException: Could not open connection

OR

2016-08-18 02:14:15.799 -0400 (,,,) localhost-startStop-1 : ERROR wgsessionId= com.tableausoftware.domain.licensing.ServerLicenseHelper - Could not access core licensing database after 10 retries
java.lang.RuntimeException: Workgroup database connection error

OR 

Failed to instantiate [com.tableausoftware.domain.user.service.UserService]: Constructor threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/http/HttpRequest

Environment

  • Tableau Server
  • JMX ports

Resolution

Disable the JMX ports with the following command:  

tabadmin set service.jmx_enabled false

Cause

Something is interfering with communication on VizQL's JMX ports (9400-9403).
