Issue

Background images are missing, distorted, oversized, cut off, upside down or reversed.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

Missing image

If the image does not appear in the view, check the following:
  • Make sure the X and Y field(s) set in Add Background Image are present in the view.
  • Ensure that the axis scale contains the values you entered in Add Background Image. For example, if you entered 600-800 for your X axis, but the data only contains entries from 1 to 100, the image will not appear.
  • Ensure that the fields in Rows and Columns are set as Dimension rather than AVG or SUM by right-clicking the field on Rows or Columns and selecting Dimension.

Distorted image

If the image is stretched, compressed, or otherwise incorrectly scaled, ensure that you have locked the aspect ratio:
  1. Select Map > Background Images > <Data Source Name>
  2. Select the image, and choose Edit
  3. In the Options tab, check Lock Aspect Ratio, then click OK.

Image is too large or cut off

If your image is scaled larger than actual size, or only a small section of the image is visible, this may indicate that the view is zoomed in to the area with data.
  1. Select Map > Background Images > <Data Source Name>
  2. Select the image from the list and click Edit.
  3. On the Options tab, check Always Show Entire Image.

Image appears upside-down or reversed

Verify that the x-axis and y-axis are set up correctly.
  1. On the view, right-click each axis and select Edit Axis.
  2. Under Scale, ensure that Reversed is not selected.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue,
  1. Select Map> Background Images> <Data Source Name>
  2. Select the image from the list and click Edit
  3. In the Edit Background Image dialog box, switch the X and Y fields. For example, if Sales is selected for the X field and Profit for the Y field, select Profit for X and Sales for Y.
  4. Click OK
