Issue

When a user opens a workbook that was published with a live Google BigQuery connection, the view shows a spinner for several minutes before producing message:

"An error occurred"

Environment

  • Tableau Online
  • Google BigQuery connection published without embedded credentials

Resolution

The error can be caused by one of the following reasons:

Scenario 1

The viewer does not have a Google BigQuery account with all of the necessary access permissions to the data sources used in the view.

Resolution

Ensure that the viewer has the necessary access permissions to the data sources used in the view. The BigQuery account used must allow access to all the data sources used in the view.

Scenario 2

The publisher of the workbook has not embedded data source credentials during publishing for a Google BigQuery account with the necessary access permissions to the data sources used in the view.

Resolution

See Set Credentials for Accessing Your Published Data for instructions on how to set embedded data source credentials. The publisher should choose the "Embedded Password" option, not "Prompt user".

Cause

The viewer provided credentials for a Google BigQuery account that does not have permission to access the data that's used in the view.
