Ambiguous Location when Using Two Letter Country Codes

Published: 29 Apr 2014
Last Modified Date: 07 Feb 2017

Issue

When importing a geographic dimension that uses two letter country codes, some codes might not be recognized and appear as Ambiguous when matching locations.

Environment

Tableau Desktop

Resolution

  1. Go to Map > Edit Locations.
  2. In the Country drop-down menu, select From Field and the desired field.
  3. Under 2-char codes, choose either ISO or FIPS.

Cause

Tableau uses both ISO and FIPS country codes, and some codes have different meanings depending on the standard used. For example, CH is China in FIPS and Switzerland in ISO.
