Aggregated Measures Are Red and "Not Supported" with Published Live ODBC Connection

Published: 11 Jan 2017
Last Modified Date: 16 Feb 2017

Issue

When connected to a published Live ODBC Connection, in Tableau Desktop any aggregate measure placed in the view may not allow the measure to be placed in the view or the measure may turn red and display the following error:
The aggregate used by <field name> is not supported by the data source.

Additionally, Tableau Server Web Edit has the same behavior as Tableau Desktop when attempting to create a new workbook based on a published Live ODBC Connection.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server 10.0.0-10.0.6, 10.1.0-10.1.4
  • Live Databases (ODBC) Connection

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Server 10.0.7 or 10.1.5. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server.

Option 2

  • Editing in Tableau Desktop: Use a live connection to the original data source (do not connect to published data sources).
  • Editing via Tableau Server's Web Edit: Try one of the following options:
    • Use an extract instead of live connection.
    • If applicable, use the native database driver.

Cause

The issue appears to only affect Live ODBC Connections that have been published to Tableau Server 10.0 and 10.1.

Additional Information

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 594279) that has been fixed in a recent version of Tableau Server.
