Admin Views Do Not Track Views Accessed Via Dashboard Actions When "Show sheets as tabs" is Enabled

Issue

Views accessed through dashboard filter actions are not captured in Tableau Server's Postgres "historical events" table, which prevents the Admin Views and Custom Admin Views from showing all view access events.

Environment

  • Tableau Server up to 9.3.9, 10.0.0-10.0.3, and 10.1.0-10.1.1
  • Tableau Server PostgreSQL

Resolution

Option 1

To have Tableau Server log all dashboard actions, please upgrade to Tableau Server 9.3.11, 10.0.5, 10.1.3 or later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server and the Server upgrade page

If you are unable to upgrade, please review Options 2 and 3 below.

Option 2

While publishing the workbook, uncheck "show sheets as tabs". This will result in each view opening in a new window, and tabs will not appear inside the window.

Option 3

Modify the existing "Filter" actions to be URL Actions. This will result in the target dashboard opening in a new window, but tabs will show inside the window. Filter values can be passed as URL parameters, for more information see How View URLs Are Structured

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID 576211) which has been resolved in a later version of the product.
In earlier versions of the product, Tableau Server Postgres only registered a view access if the view is opened in a new window or, depending on the version of Tableau Server, via one of the workbook tabs.
