Adding Parameters to URL Ineffective after Upgrading to Tableau Server

Published: 17 Jan 2014
Last Modified Date: 14 Jul 2015

Issue

After you upgrade to Tableau Server 8.1 - 8.3, adding parameters to the URL no longer works as expected. For example, adding .png or .pdf to the end of the URL does not generate an image, and adding :record_performance=yes does not start a performance recording.

Environment

Tableau Server 8.1 - 8.3

Resolution

Add the parameter before the hash symbol (#).

Note: If you are using tabcmd to generate files, do not include the hash symbol. For more information, see the Tabcmd Examples KB.

Example 1:

To create a PDF, change the following URL:

http://tableauserver.com/views/SuperStore/Sheet#1
to:
http://tableauserver.com/views/SuperStore/Sheet.pdf#1

Example 2:

To start a performance recording, change the following URL:

http://tableauserver.com/views/SuperStore/Sheet#1
to:
http://tableauserver.com/views/SuperStore/Sheet?:record_performance=yes#1

Cause

This behavior is by design.

Additional Information

  • This hash fragment was implemented in Tableau Server 8.1, to enable you to display different configurations of a view on multiple browser tabs at the same time. You can interact with each of the tabs independent of the other.
  • For more information on the URL structure for the new hash fragment, see Hash Symbol and Number Are Added to View URL.
