Issue

How to add specific values of calculated fields to captions

Environment

  • Tableau Professional

Resolution

To display sales for one value for EMEA sales in the caption:

1. Select Analysis > Create Calculated Field.

2. In the Calculated Field dialog box that opens, do the following, and then click OK:
+ Name the calculated field. In this example, the calculated field is named EMEA Sales.
+ In the formula field, create a calculated field similar to the following:

IF [Region] = "EMEA" THEN [Sales] END

3. Drag [EMEA Sales] to Detail on the Marks card. Dragging a calculated field to Detail makes it available to add to the caption.

4. Insert [EMEA Sales] into caption and format as desired.

Additional Information

The visualization must show the same level of detail as desired for the value being inserted into the caption. For example, if the map shows a sales value for each country, then Tableau Desktop will display [EMEA Sales] as a range of values for countries in EMEA rather than one value for all of EMEA.

If the caption shows a range of values, it is due to the fields on the Level of Detail shelf. Level of Detail expressions can be used to show values different than the view.
