Issue

When upgrading Tableau Server on the same hardware where the previous version was installed, the following error might be encountered:

Setup failed to install Tableau Server.  You will need to uninstall Tableau Server before you try again.

Environment

  • Tableau Server

Resolution

Perform a clean installation of Tableau Server.

***NOTE*** BEFORE PERFORMING A CLEAN/COMPLETE UNINSTALL OF TABLEAU SERVER, ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE A CURRENT BACKUP OF YOUR DATA.

Step 1
Uninstall the existing server using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. If you have a distributed environment, use Add/remove Programs on your primary machine.

Note: Uninstalling removes the application software, but leaves your data and configuration settings on the machine.

Step 2
Manually delete the versioned Tableau Server directory. The exact location of the directory depends on your operating system.

32-bit: C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server
64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server and C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server

Important: Deleting this directory removes your existing content so that a new installer does not try to import it into the new server.

After completely uninstalling Tableau Server, proceed with installing the new version of Tableau Server. After installation completes successfully, you can then restore your content with the tabadmin restore command as detailed in this Product Help guide.
