Error “Server not licensed to connect…” message after adding a new Product Key

After performing an action on a workbook in Tableau Server, such as updating an extract, accessing a view, or publishing the workbook, you may see the following error:

The server is not licensed to connect to [datasourcetype] data sources.


  • Tableau Server
  • After adding a new Product Key


If this error message appears when Tableau Server has not been restarted after a new product key is activated, restart Tableau Server using the tabadmin command line tool.

Restart Tableau Server

Step 1

Sign in to the Tableau Server machine as a local administrator, either directly or through a Remote Desktop connection.

Step 2

Open the Command Prompt by right-clicking the icon and choosing "Run as administrator". In the Command Prompt window, change to the Tableau Server bin directory by typing the following command:

cd C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version>\bin

Step 3

Run the following commands :

  1. tabadmin stop
  2. tabadmin start
  3. tabadmin status -v
