Error "Maintenance expired on <date>. Maintenance is required through <date> to run this version." Installing or Activating

When you try to activate or install Tableau Desktop, the following error occurs:
Maintenance expired on <date>. Maintenance is required through <date> to run this version.
Check your Tableau Customer Portal or have your Tableau Portal Administrator view the specific key and the current maintenance end date.
If Tableau Desktop was activated using the standard activation process and there is current maintenance shown in the Customer Portal, but not reflected in Manage Product Keys, refresh the key. See Refresh Maintenance Date for the Product Key for more information.
If Tableau Desktop was activated offline and there is current maintenance shown in the Customer Portal, but not reflected in Manage Product Keys, activate offline using the key which has current maintenance listed. See Tableau Offline Activation for more information.
If the key does not have current maintenance, you will only be able to install and activate versions of Tableau Desktop which were released prior to the maintenance end date. See Product Downloads and Release Notes for each version's release date.
If additional maintenance is required, contact your Tableau Account Manager.
The following scenarios can cause this error:
Key has not been refreshed.
Key was activated offline, and a newer key with updated maintenance is now available.
Key has expired maintenance.
