Setting URL Actions to Open in a New Browser Tab

Question

How to set up URL actions so they will consistently open in a new browser tab.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server

Answer

In Tableau Desktop, add ?linktarget=_blank (if there is only one parameter in the URL) or &linktarget=_blank (if there are multiple parameters in the URL) to the end of the URL in the Edit URL Action window.

Additional Information

The linktarget parameter has two values:
  • linktarget=_self, opens links in the same tab/window
  • linktarget=_blank, opens links in a new tab/window
  • linktarget=_parent, opens links in parent window (for embedded views)

Unlike other parameters which apply directly to the view being loaded ('embed=y', 'Category=Technology'), the linktarget parameter controls the behavior of all links WITHIN the view that parameter was appended to.
So, a view opened using the URL 'http://host/views/workbook/view?embed=y&:linktarget=_self' will not necessarily open in the same view. Instead, all subsequent links from that view will open in the same tab/window.
